The booster dose for people who’re vaccinated with AstraZeneca and Janssen is needed after five months

By the assessment of the Estonian Immunoprophylaxis Expert Committee, people who've had their vaccinations against COVID-19 with Janssen and AstraZeneca vaccines, are eligible for a booster dose after five months of their complement of vaccination. People, who've had vaccinations with Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, don't need a booster dose before six months have passed.

Experts evaluated that booster doses for people who have had AstraZeneca and Janssen COVID-19 vaccines, are reasonable after five months because the efficiency of these vaccines decreases faster in time. Even if only one of the doses during the vaccination course was done with AstraZeneca, booster jab can be done five months after the completion of the vaccination course. Most certainly, all elderly people and people in the COVID-19 risk groups, should have a booster jab.

Booster dose is available to all adults in Estonia. Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine Comirnaty and Moderna vaccine Spikevax, are used for booster doses in Estonia, and it doesn't matter which vaccine was used during the first vaccination course. The dose of a Spikevax vaccine is half of the one that was used during the first vaccination course, with Comirnaty, similar dose than during the first vaccination course is used.

The Estonian Immunoprophylaxis Expert Committee advises the Ministry of Social Affairs about the state immunization and other vaccination-related topics. It includes representatives of allergist-immunologists, family physicians, paediatrics, infectionists, nurses, National Health Board, the Agency of Medicines, Estonian Health Insurance Fund, and the Ministry of Social Affairs.

The objectives of COVID-19 vaccination are to protect COVID-19 risk groups, to prevent and reduce COVID-19 related illness and death.  Vaccination can reduce the spread of the virus, the burden on the health system and the economy, and ensure the normal functioning of society.
